The Muskegon Heights community is mourning the tragic loss of Tayvon Watson, a bright and promising 15-year-old student whose life was cut far too short on Tuesday evening, February 24, 2026, following a shooting in the 2400 block near Sixth and Seventh Streets, close to West Hovey Avenue. Authorities reported multiple 911 calls regarding gunfire, and when officers arrived, Tayvon was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was transported to Trinity Health Muskegon, where he sadly passed away from his injuries.

Tayvon was a student at the Innovative Learning Center within Orchard View Schools, known by teachers, classmates, and friends as an outgoing, respectful, and kind young man. Superintendent Thomas Hamilton expressed the district’s sorrow in a letter to parents, extending deepest sympathy to Tayvon’s family, friends, and the school community during this incredibly difficult time.

Friends and community members remember Tayvon for his bright personality and genuine character. Aviance Watts, president of Taking Back Muskegon and a close friend of Tayvon’s family, described him as a “good kid,” someone who was not a troublemaker, but a young man full of promise and potential.
