Reese Rickards Michigan Death, Obituary: WBCT DJ, Beloved Radio Legend has Died

Reese Rickards Michigan Death, Obituary

The Michigan radio community is mourning the loss of Reese Rickards, longtime WBCT B-93 personality and respected broadcast journalist, who passed away this morning with his beloved wife Kim by his side.

For more than 30 years, Reese shared a radio studio with colleagues who became lifelong friends. He wasn’t just a coworker — he was a constant presence, a mentor, and a driving force behind the success of WBCT (B-93). Alongside morning show partner Neal Dionne, Reese helped build the station from its earliest days, setting a standard of excellence that shaped generations of broadcasters who followed.

Those who worked with Reese remember the unmistakable energy he brought to the studio each morning. Arriving before dawn — often up hours earlier — he carried a passion that never faded. He lived and breathed news. A relentless news hound, Reese was always chasing the next story, searching for a unique angle, and striving to be the first to deliver it to listeners across West Michigan.

But while he was serious about journalism, Reese also embraced the joy and silliness that made radio magical. Longtime listeners may recall his legendary “10ft Tall Chicken Day” parade broadcast in Byron Center, or the unforgettable “B-93 Bomb Shelter” segments — created simply by placing a trash can over his head to produce an echo effect. It was that perfect blend of professionalism and playful creativity that made him unforgettable.

Beyond the microphone, Reese was a mentor and encourager. He offered advice freely, listened patiently, and reminded colleagues of a truth that defined his philosophy: “This isn’t rocket science, it’s radio. Just have stupid fun.”

From Birthday Bashes to town caravans supporting the B-93 Roofsit for Kids, Reese was woven into the fabric of the station and the community it served. His voice became part of daily life for countless listeners.

Today, colleagues and friends reflect on the laughter, early morning conversations, and the legacy he leaves behind. Reese Rickards will be remembered as a creative talent, a dedicated broadcaster, and above all, a good man.

He is deeply missed.

Please keep his wife Kim and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
