The community of Bernalillo County is mourning the tragic loss of Sergeant Michael Schlattman, a dedicated law enforcement officer with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, who was killed in the line of duty on Interstate 40. Schlattman, who had served with distinction since 2012 and was promoted to sergeant in 2024, was performing a routine traffic stop when a semi-truck struck the rear of his department-issued vehicle, tragically pinning him beneath. Despite the heroic efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Affectionately known as “Schlatty” among his colleagues, Sergeant Schlattman was widely respected for his servant leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to both his deputies and the community. Sheriff John Allen described him as a man “who never asked a deputy to do something he would not do himself,” emphasizing Schlattman’s commitment to protecting others while improving the agency and supporting those around him.
Over the course of his career, Schlattman served in numerous roles, including as a detective in the special investigations and auto theft units, as well as a task force officer with the United States Marshals Service and the Drug Enforcement Administration. At the time of his passing, he was serving as a sergeant in the East Mountains region, leaving a lasting impact on the community he devoted his life to safeguarding.
Several individuals, including the semi-truck driver, sustained injuries and received medical treatment at the University of New Mexico Hospital. Investigators continue to review the incident, including dash-cam footage, as they work to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this devastating accident.
A solemn procession honoring Sergeant Schlattman took place along I-40, traveling through the city to the Office of the Medical Investigator. A formal memorial service will be announced once the family is ready, giving friends, colleagues, and community members the opportunity to pay their respects and celebrate his life and service.
Sergeant Schlattman’s courage, dedication, and selflessness have left an indelible mark on Bernalillo County. He was a protector, mentor, and friend whose legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched. As the community mourns, his memory stands as a reminder of the bravery, integrity, and sacrifice embodied by those who serve in law enforcement.
May Sergeant Michael Schlattman rest in eternal peace, and may his family, colleagues, and the residents he served find comfort and strength in honoring a life committed to the protection and betterment of others. 🕊️
