The Radford community is mourning the tragic loss of 19-year-old Joey Raccuia, a freshman baseball player at Radford University, who died in a single-vehicle crash on Wednesday.

According to the Radford Police Department, officers responded on February 25 at approximately 11:20 a.m. to the 10 block of East Street following reports of a one-car accident. Upon arrival, officers and emergency responders immediately rendered aid. Despite their efforts, Raccuia — the sole occupant of the vehicle — was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation, and authorities have stated that no additional information will be released at this time.

Raccuia was a middle infielder on the Radford University baseball team. A graduate of Radford High School, he also trained at the PDG Academy in Fredericksburg, developing his skills and passion for the game. Baseball was deeply rooted in his family — he shared his name with his father, Joe Raccuia, who previously served as head baseball coach at Radford University for 12 seasons before stepping down.

Teammates and coaches remember Joey as a dedicated athlete who brought energy, focus, and heart to the field. As a freshman, he was at the beginning of what many believed would be a promising collegiate career. His loss is being felt profoundly by the baseball program and the broader campus community.

Radford University had been scheduled to host a three-game homestand beginning Friday. At this time, no decision has been announced regarding whether those games will proceed as planned.

As the university and the City of Radford grieve, thoughts and prayers are with Joey’s family, friends, teammates, and coaches during this incredibly difficult time. His memory will remain part of the Highlander family.
