In Loving Memory of Hannah Kent: Justice and Remembrance for a Precious Life 🕊️

The community continues to grieve the tragic loss of Hannah Kent, the bright-eyed 8-month-old whose life was taken in April 2021. Though years have passed, her memory remains deeply cherished by her family and all who mourned alongside them.

On February 23, 2026, a Boone County courtroom marked a significant moment of justice. Judge Brouck Jacobs sentenced Jennifer Johnson, 49, to life in prison for the murder of Hannah, along with 15 years for each count of child endangerment. Johnson had previously been found guilty on January 8 of second-degree felony murder and two counts of first-degree child endangerment. For Hannah’s loved ones, the sentencing brought a measure of closure after years of grief, courtroom proceedings, and the search for answers no parent should endure.

Prosecutor Risa Perkins argued that Johnson was the only person capable of inflicting the fatal injuries. She highlighted inconsistencies in Johnson’s statements following Hannah’s death, including alleged contradictions regarding phone activity, the presence of blood on her clothing, and why Hannah’s clothes had been changed while under her care. The defense, led by Manuel Tatayon, maintained that reasonable doubt existed, suggesting the injuries could have occurred while Hannah shared a bed with her siblings.

Medical testimony detailed the devastating injuries Hannah endured. Dr. Carl Stacy, who conducted the autopsy, testified to multiple areas of trauma across her small body, including bruising to her head, chest, abdomen, and back. Body camera footage shown to jurors captured Johnson claiming Hannah had been healthy when put to bed at 2:15 a.m., with the next sighting at 6 a.m. revealing her bruised and unresponsive.

Hannah’s mother, Lanetta Hill, bravely recounted returning home to find her baby unresponsive and attempting CPR before rushing her to the hospital, where medical staff fought to save her life. Family members testified about the devastating impact the loss had on their lives, highlighting Hannah’s joy, innocence, and the love she inspired in all who knew her.

Though brief, Hannah Kent’s life left an enduring imprint. She was a daughter, sister, and beloved child whose presence brought warmth and love. While the court’s sentence cannot undo the pain, it affirms that Hannah’s life mattered and that justice was pursued.

May Hannah Kent rest in peace. May her memory serve as a reminder of the responsibility to protect the most vulnerable, and may her family find strength in one another as they honor her life. 🕊️
